But for 12-year-old Lucy, the tranquility of farm life was shattered when she witnessed her mother’s death from a tragic horse-riding accident.

Lucy’s father, John, was devastated by the loss of his wife and feared for the future of his children. He knew that they needed a fresh start, away from the constant reminders of their mother’s death. So, he made the difficult decision to relocate his family to the hustle and bustle of North Melbourne and enroll them in a private Catholic school.

But this new life wasn’t enough to save Lucy. She was forever influenced by her mother’s death and struggled to cope with the loss. She became distant and withdrawn, unable to connect with her classmates or teachers. Her grades began to slip, and she was constantly in trouble.

John watched helplessly as his daughter spiraled out of control, falling deeper and deeper into the twisted underground of Melbourne. He knew that he had to do something to save her, but he didn’t know where to turn.

Meanwhile, Archie was trying to find his own way in this new world. He had always dreamed of following in his father’s footsteps as a singer and entertainer. So when he heard about the Battle of the Bands competition, he knew that this was his chance to make that dream a reality.

The competition winner would have the opportunity to support the biggest band in Australia and perform live on Countdown, the biggest music show in the country. Archie formed a band with his classmates, and they began rehearsing tirelessly in hopes of winning.

But there was one thing standing in their way: an arch-rival band led by a charismatic singer named Jake. Jake and his band were determined to win at any cost, and they would stop at nothing to sabotage Archie’s band.

As Archie and Lucy struggled to find their place in this new world, they both realized that the only way to move forward was to confront their past and come to terms with their mother’s death. But it wouldn’t be easy, and they would need the support of each other and their father to make it through

This is one lesson I thought I would have learnt from my mistakes. It was the start of a journey riddled of recklessness, booze, drugs, sex, crime, religion, but best of all, rock ‘n’ roll and good times

This book has been in the making for literally three decades. First putting pencil to paper back in 1991, I wrote the first chapter or so while spending two nights in a hospital bed at Mossman, North Queensland. This was followed by many countless late nights writing bits and pieces over the years, even decades. The past two to three years have been more intense, borderline obsessed with the completion of writing, hiring, and collaborating with professional editors.

The book was born around a handful of songs that had been written and performed. The song ‘Carefully Sold’ was written on a farm when I was 19 and various other songs over the years.

Having whooping cough in early 2010s damaged my vocal cords, destroyed my confidence, and my self-esteem. Visiting dark and stormy places in my mind, I haven’t sung nor played in my band, Lizardskin, or any form since. A feeling of dead-man walking cursed me. Writing this story became a positive creative outlet, shining a much-needed light during the darkest of times.

Those who know me well will know I get no more thrill and enjoyment than out of telling and sharing a good story or yarn over a few beers. I hope you enjoy my first attempt of story-writing and novel.
